LMPC is an acronym of The Legal Metrology (Pre-packed Commodity) Rules 2011. The Legal Metrology (Pre-packed Commodity) Rules 2011 aim to achieve several objectives:

  1. Making consumers aware of pre-packed goods.
  2. Establishing uniform standards for pre-packed goods.
  3. Enforcing compliance with specific standards.
  4. Protecting the rights of consumers.

In this blog, we’ll delve into the significance of LMPC importer registration and why it’s necessary

LMPC Packer Registration

LMPC Importer Registration:

Rule 27 of the Legal Metrology (Pre-packed Commodity) Rules 2011 stipulates that any person importing commodities for sale, distribution, or delivery in India must obtain registration from the Legal Metrology department. This registration is referred to as LMPC importer registration.

Thus, anyone importing commodities for sale, distribution, or delivery must secure LMPC importer registration. However, it’s important to note that this registration isn’t required for persons importing commodities for captive use or self-consumption.

Consequences:

Failure to obtain this registration could lead to several repercussions:

  1. The Central government has instructed customs authorities to ensure LMPC Rules’ compliance during the import of commodities. Importers failing to obtain this registration might encounter clearance issues from customs, leading to hefty demurrage charges.
  2. Rule 32 of the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules 2011 specifies that contravening any provisions of these Rules could result in fines as prescribed.
