What does mean EPR (Extended producer responsibility) for used oil?
Hazardous and Other Waste (Management and transboundary movements) Rules 2016 has cast the obligation on producers of base oil or lubricants oil or importer of used oil through the Extended Producer Responsibility scheme. Under the EPR producer is required to take all the necessary steps for the proper collection and recycling of used oil in an environmentally sound manner. The overall objective of this rule is to ensure the collection and recycling of used oil in such a manner that does not lead to any harmful impact on the environment and human health. since one liter of used oil can contaminate one million liters of freshwater that is one year, supply for 50 people as it contains toxic substances such as benzene, lead, zinc, and cadmium, in addition to impurities such as dirt, and metal parts. Massive consumption of oil after extraction from the earth, Processing, manufacturing, transportation, and disposal contributes substantially to the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere thereby increasing pollution. Therefore, the Central Government notifies the Extended producer responsibility for used oil under Hazardous and other waste (Management and transboundary movement) Rules 2016
What does mean by used oil?
Used oil means any oil derived from crude oil or mixtures containing synthetic oil including spent oil, used engine oil, gear oil, hydraulic oil, turbine oil, compressor oil, industrial gear oil, heat transfer oil, transformer oil, and their tank bottom sludges.
Who is required to get registration of EPR for used oil?
Following persons are required to obtain registration of EPR for used oil
01
Producers

What is base oil?
Base oil is derived from crude oil through a refining process. In the refining process, all impurities and other unwanted elements are removed which results in a more suitable consistence product. Base oil serves as the primary component in the formulation of various lubricants, such as engine oil, industrial oils, and automotive lubricants. It is used as a base upon which additives are mixed to create finished lubricants with specific properties.
What is the EPR target for used oil?
EPR target can be classified into two categories
- For producers of base oil and lubricants oil
SL. No. | Financial Year | Used oil recycling Target |
