What does FSSAI Mean?
FSSAI stands for Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, which has been established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. It has been created to lay down science-based standards for food articles and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import to ensure the availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption. The Act also aims to establish a single reference point for all matters related to food safety and standards by moving from a multi-level, multi-departmental system to a single line of command. To this effect, an independent statutory authority known as the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India was established, with its head office in Delhi.
What is FSSAI registration or license?
FSSAI registration or license refers to the authorization granted by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to a person or entity engaged in the food business.

- If a food manufacturing or processing unit has a production capacity of more than 2 metric tons (MT) per day, it must obtain a Central License. If the production capacity is less than 2 MT per day, a State License is required.
- If an entity operates a food storage facility without atmospheric control, where packed or unpacked food is stored for distribution, and the storage capacity exceeds 50,000 metric tons (MT), a Central License is required. If the capacity is up to 50,000 MT, a State License is required.
